War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Signal Station, Fort Pulaski, [Ga.], Apr. 23, 1865, in part: "…the prospect of a speedy peace truly encouraging and…no doubt I shall get clear of the service…[of] what a sacrifice has peace been won…[was crushed]…yesterday the nation was at the height of joyful exhalation over the decisive victories which seems to promise peace and a restored Union today every loyal heart must suffer the terrible shock at the calamity which has been permitted to befall us in the assassination of our Beloved President. The glory of our triumphs is robbed of its lusture, the flags that flaunted their glittering colors in the sunshine yesterday, today must hang suspended at half mast for its chosen chief lies low in death…the same political fury and hate that lit the flames of this rebellion inspired this hellish deed. God grant that the officers of justice ay speedily bring the guilty to summary punishment. Today we fire a salute of one hundred guns in commemoration of the fall of Mobile and the surrender of Johnston's army. I expect every moment to hear of the cessation of hostilities…D. D. Barrows…".
