Union soldier letter written by “Cha(rle)s Ryant who enlisted on 7/7/1861 at New York City, NY into "H" Co. NY 47th Infantry and died of wounds on 6/19/1864 at Washington, DC. The four page letter is datelined Head Quarters Provost Guards, Hilton Head, Jan.18, 1863. In part, “There is considerable excitement here now about the reduction of Charleston. There is nothing thought of here now, only going to Charleston. ... Yesterday General D. Hunter arrived and assumed the command of this department. There is fifteen thousand more troops expected here every day. This morning the New Ironside Passaic and several other gunboats arrived here. ... here is six of the Monitors on their way to this post, and as soon as they arrive, the expedition will start.”
