A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Vols., "Aboard Transport S. R. Spaulding, Aug. 1, 1864," to his wife, in part: "…three nights out of four we have been up after an hour or two's sleep…we are on our way to Washington. The whole corps will arrive there this afternoon…we are going up the river…perhaps [to] Harpers Ferry…the place to which we moved when we left Bermuda Hundred is called 'four mile creek' near Deep Bottom. Our object in going there was…to draw the Rebs to that point from some other…the Rebs were heavily reinforced. When we evacuated our regt covered the retreat falling back from one point to another [with] the Rebs following up but keeping a proper distance. The Brigadier Gen. [Henry Warner] Birge is aboard of this boat with his staff. He eats at a separate table, thinks himself a little above common officers & he puts on more air then Gen. Grant. I don't think he is any great affair for a good officer is always free to mingle with under officers & men. The 14th N. Hampshire is on this boat. The 14th Me. went on another. This is the same boat that carried the Democratic delegates to the Charlestown Convention. It is a fine boat…Wm. C. Towle. The original transmittal cover is included. VG
