A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 12th Maine Vols., Berryville, [Va.], Sept. 8, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…I wrote of seeing Joe & John. They were passing [with] the 8th Corps under Gen. Crooks…it is no easy matter to find a Regt, brigade or division in such an army as this when…scattered over eight miles…we arrived here late last saturday night…the popping of musketry and the roar of artillery lasted until late in the evening and we all thought that a general engagement would take place the next morning. My position for the night was in the rear of the Regt under a tree beside my horse ready to mount at a moments notice…in the morning…the Rebs had retreated though a few were left to keep up appearances and occasionally exchange shots with our pickets . Our brigade made a reconnoissance day before yesterday. We found a few rifle pits but no enemy. We are 12 miles from Harpers Ferry. The guerrillas are ready to pounce upon every train that is not properly guarded. An ambulance train was captured the other day and our brigade are now out of hard bread on account of the non appearance of the wagons…we are liable to move from here at any time, advance or retreat…Wm. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
