SHERMAN, William T.(1820-1891) Lieutenant General. Notorious for making Georgia groan. Led the famous "March to the Sea", and took Johnston's surrender in Durham Station, N. C., on April 26, 1865. Autograph Letter Signed, “W.T. Sherman, General” 4pp., on “Headquarters Army of the United States” letterhead, Washington DC., June 26, 1871. In small part, “I have your long letter about young Walsh and it is as you say a tale of sorrow, but too common. I have seen what you request, will give a letter to the Cmdg officer at the Navy Yard which is on Mare Island.... I don’t know who now Commands that yard but I think it is Goldsborough ... almost any Navy officer will give attention to my request as I am half web footed having gone across Cape Horn. ... You can always call on me and I will ever be most willing to do anything in my power .... But alas times are changed and our country men have already forgot their old soldiers and many of them are left to scratch for a living ....” The sheets are slightly dirty, minor clean fold splits, VG.
