War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain John A. Mackey, Co. B, 2nd Tennesse Infantry, 2pp. quarto, Camp Walker, Near Dumfries, Virginia, September 3, 1861, and reads in part: “...We are now in four miles of the Maryland shore. We are now stationed on a point where the River is only about 1-3/4 miles wide, & we are throwing up a Battery there so as to Blockade the River, & when we get that done, then we will go into Maryland & then this war will stop. But before we get there, there will be a great many poor soldier that will go to his final resting place & there lay until the Lord calls for him to rise, but I hope that the Lord will be with us, & I hope he will guide us along the right road & may we whip the Yankees & return home safe is my prayer now & forever...I expect to be in a fews days (in Maryland.) It is said that we are to take winter quarters in Baltimore an the Virginians in Washington. I would be willing to do so if we all could get there safe, but as I have said there will be a great many that will fall by the hands of Lincoln’s Host before we do that...” Fine condition.
