A great war-date Confederate medical related letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Surgeon Benjamin W. Avent, Kingston, Ga., Mar. 12, 1864 to Army of Tennessee Medical Director Samuel H. Stout, reading, in part: "I received this morning an order from the War Department relieving Dr. Swiney [William E. Swinney, Sr.] from duty in this hospital…delivering him back to 48th Geo. Regiment. Dr. Swinney has proved himself here to be both efficient and competent to take charge of a hospital…I dislike very much to give him up. The Medical officers under his control have petitioned that the order be reversed which I have approved and send to you, thus privately, that you may take such action…as you may think best…if he is forced to return [to his regiment] it will result in an offer of his resignation owing to a personal difficulty existing between himself and some of the officers in that command…he cannot return there without a compromise of honor…he is…absent on a ten days leave from Genl. Johnston…his wife is dangerously ill and will probably die in a few days. He left before the order came…hence all this action is without his knowledge…Erwin Hospital has now a capacity for 250 patients and is in need of one other asst. surgeon…B. W. Avent." Near fine.
