A nice war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Ira F. Gensel, 4th United States Regular Infantry, [MWIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62 died 12/28/62], "Washington City, D. C., Feb. 19, 1862", in part: "…black clouds are driving each other in rapid succession across the sky…through the tree tops in Washington Square while a thick impenetrable fog shuts…my…fine view of the Capitol…I am…still on duty at the prison…"Little Rose" is well again. I have been trying to get her photograph for you but cannot an order has been issued forbidding her being allowed to go out of the prison. It is extremely hard for the child but under the circumstances it is perhaps best…Ira F. Gensel." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
