A great war-date Union officer's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Ira F. Gensel, 4th United States Regular Infantry, [MWIA Fredericksburg, Va., 12/13/62 died 12/28/62], "Camp near Beckley on James River, Va., July 6, 1862", in part: "…I am not yet rested and don't feel muck like writing to anyone…I am safe…have been through three battles unharmed. In all of them I was an aide-de-camp to the Genl. [Sykes]…and was thrown three times from my horse by the explosion of shells…thus far I have escaped . Will it be so in the battles soon to follow-cant tell-time alone must prove that. I pray I may although I shall not skirl from any duty imposed upon me. Many that I was intimate with have fell, among the photographs I have sent you was one Lieut. [Thomas D.] Parker [2nd United States Regular Infantry]. He was killed dead close by me-poor fellow I saw him fall [during the battle of Gaines Mill, June 27, 1862]. I would like to describe to you the feelings of one in battle, but cant…on the night of the last battle I slept on the field and at daylight found three dead men lying close by me and such a sight. God save me from another. The shrieks of the dying, the groans of the wounded. Oh; indeed, it was terrible. One poor fellow asked me for "Gods sake" to kill him as it would be a mercy to him will I ever forget that look [on] that face. I expect in a few days to see quite a number here form Bucks Co. We are on the banks of the river. They will come to take care of the sick in the 104th and in the companies from the county is the Penna. Reserves…will write again tomorrow if there is no battle. One is expected hourly…Ira." The original transmittal cover is included. Also included is a modern copy of a war-date photograph of Ira Gensel in uniform. Minor toning, else VG.
