A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on Union and Constitution patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Arlington, [Heights, Va.], Oct. 3, 1861, reading, in part: "…all our regiment excepting Co. K are going to camp on an eminence commanding Falls Church and Munson's Hill…Co. K…are detailed to guard the ferry and aqueduct running from Georgetown across the Potomac to Arlington…of our regiment taking some prisoners…there was but 2 and one a Negro for who they had been looking [for] as he escaped out the lines of our pickets…his family lived in a log hut just within our picket…[he] is thought to give information rebels of our picket stations…this a. m. there has passed…some 10 or 12 regiments of infantry, cavalry and artillery…it looks somewhat like war. In our guard house is a Cesession prisoner that owns a farm near Major Nutt's, a major in the Rebel army…near Falls Church there was a house that had been used by the Rebel pickets and when we advanced they left leaving a hog all dressed with strychnine skillfully rubbed into the meat with the expectations that our troops would eat it but we were ordered not to eat or drink anything until an examination was had of what ever we might find. You may have heard of the Miner House. Our troops burned it will all the furniture…at Falls Church we burned Major Nutt's house, barns and crops…this major had a splendid house and splendidly furnished with carpentry and piano…all the furniture was splendid…our troops came upon them so soon they had no time to pack…there was a number of houses and barns destroyed…I…am now quartered in Fort McQuade. Our boys are very angry at being left behind…R. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
