A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on U. S. Capitol patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., Miner's Hill, [Va.], [n. d., but late Oct. 1861], reading, in part: "…we have had our knapsacks packed hourly expecting marching orders. Our division and…(Smith's) have…been shelling and shooting from here for the purpose of finding out…whether there was any fortifications…in front of us…our pickets…had quite a little time…a party of 20 were detailed for skirmishers and among them was myself. We got within the lines (picket lines) of the enemy and came near being surrounded and cut off from our Reg. but our rifles were too long range for them…we shot 2 and retreated double quick…after getting back about 400 were sent out and we drove them way back from their picket position and followed them…until officers thought best to back down…I have seen Gen. McClellan, Gen. Morrell and Gen. Porter. They look the same as other men…they have been building an observation just in front of our Reg. for the purpose of seeing whether their are…forts or camps between here and Fairfax…our Co. just made the best shot…of any Co. in the Reg…the blankets we have are very thin…I have not shaved since I came and look like a Bear. I do not intend to. They advise me not to…R. A. Hubbel." Light soiling, else VG
