A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Union & Constitution" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Robert A. Hubbel, Co. K, 14th New York State Vols., "Camp McCloud's Mill near Alexandria," [Va.], Mar. 16, 1862, reading, in part: "We…have made a movement….and are waiting for…steamers to go on an expedition…started for Centreville but arriving at Fairfax heard that the rebels had evacuated…orders came…to probably reinforce Burnside. Bull runs…fortifications were nothing in comparison to what we had imagined…both going and coming…in rained…the mud was knee deep. Many give out and did not get into camp until the day after we arrived. I…slept in wet clothes…upon the whole we have had a very bad time. Numbers thrower away their knapsacks and in fact everything…except equipments…I have not yet had to leave the ranks from being unarmed[?]…I have friends in the commissioned ranks…so I don't want you to worry about me…about 3 divisions came back intending to ship…the rebels have retreated as far as Gordonsville and are going to make a stand. We are…intending to cut them off from Richmond…we will do it in connection with Burnside. At Centreville…the inhabitants [say] there never was more than 5 guns and we found…logs shaped like guns…mounted having the appearance of a very strongly fortified place. No troops [were found] at Fairfax…Robert A. Hubbel…". Light soiling, else VG
