A rare war-date booklet, entitled: "The United States CONSCRIPTION LAW of 1863. Official and Complete." blue paper wraps, approximately 2 3/4" x 4 3/8", 32pp., published by James W. Fortune, 102 Centre Street, New York, 1863. Originally costing five cents, this booklet details fully the Conscription Act approved by the United States congress on March 2, 1863 and fully details each of the acts thirty two sections. Exemptions include age, being a legal guard of a sibling under thirteen or as being the only son of aged parents or the only son of a widow. All young men between the ages of 20 and 35 years of age, including foreigners, were eligible for the draft while unmarried men would be the first to go. The booklet also details how deserters, those who entice others to desert and spies were to be punished. Interspersed throughout the booklet, the publisher has inserted numerous military related advertisements including his own for selling Patten's approved military tactic books for 25 cents, roll books for sergeants costing 75 cents, printed blocks and patterns of notable military figures for one dollar while other advertising include Tiffany and Company and Goodyear. Tiffany's advertisement declares that the firm has "choice Military Goods" including "Stands of Regimental or National Colors" and a "Department of General Equipment which will will found to comprise everything pertaining to the Personal of Camp Furniture of the Soldier." Goodyear's advertisement features gloves, mittens, army blankets, "druggists' articles", "clothing of all kinds" and whatever "air goods" are made of India rubber. An intriguing booklet which would be worthy of being added to the collection of the armchair historian, student of American history or even an accredited institution. Very light soiling, else VG
