A good war-date Union artilleryman's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], Camp Drake, [Murfreesboro, Tenn.], May 17, 1863, in part: "…the excitement over…Hooker…taking Richmond isomer. It turned out as it always does when that army has a fight. They get whipped with a loss of 15,000 or 20,000 men every time…I wish the rebus would take Washington. It would be the best thing in the world for us. I don't blame any of the Gen. You may take the best Gen. in the world and if he is within 100 miles of Washington he will get whipped every move he makes. There is about 500 men in there that know more than all the Gen. in the field and everyone has a word to and the president is fool enough to hear…them. I hope the net time they try to take Richmond the rebus will drive them out of the state. That eastern army has better living and better clothes and puts on more style than the western boys but they cant fight with us when we go into a fight. We make up our minds to whip and go in for all that…we drill with our brigade every morning…the next time we go into a fight the rebus better look out for their artillery for our brigade is well drilled in taking batteries. We have division drill once a week…Henry D. Isbell." VG
