A good war-date Union artilleryman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry D. Isbell, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery [MWIA Chickamauga, Ga., 9/19/64; DOW 10/16/64 buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery], "In camp at Bellefont, Ala., Aug. 23, 1863," in part: "…we left Tullahoma last Sunday…we have been on the move most of the time night and day…we had good luck in getting or artillery over the mountains, much better than I expected. The Tennessee river is…about a mile of our camp. We can see the rebus on picket on the opposite bank, but there is not more than two or three hundred of them here…I don't think they will stand…a fight if we should undertake to cross at this point. We are going to stop here three or four days…the rest of the Corps is at Stevenson about two days march from here. What they are going to do with us is more than I can tell but I think we will join our corps and cross the river at Stevenson. Henry Wygle is at Tullahoma sick…he was quite sick…he wanted to come with the battery but we were all against it and finely got him to stay. Viets is a good fellow with a sick man and will do all he can for him…H. D. Isbell. Light soiling, else VG
