War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Lt. Colonel John A. Hennessey, 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry, who had the distinction of planting the first flag on the parapet at Fort Sumter, 3pp. quarto, Morris Island, South Carolina, December 20, 1864, and reads in part: “...there has been much trouble in the Regt. among some of the offiers, in regard to Genl. Order 153, which as you have seen you will not think strange or worry. Some of the officers mentioned by name have never been known to flinch from duty, while others connected with the same expedition were exonerated. Hence, no doubt, like McClellan’s Report, it will take time to soothe their present state of feelings...The Major has left us...He felt sore and no doubt would rather have been disciplined than serve longer....” More.
