War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Peter Sinclair, 101st Illinois Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Savannah, Georgia, January 14, 1865, with cover, it reads in part: “...Our Grand Reviews have all been held in the streets of this beautiful city. Sherman received each Corps separately, taking a day to each. Then Slocum reviewed his two Corps in the same way. Then Howard his. Suppose you have seen accounts of them in the papers. How the gallant old 20th was praised, and I begin to believe she merits her praise, notwithstanding my former detestation of ‘Potomac Styler.’ What a marked differenc in the discipline. Nothing to me is a grander sight than the old 20th marching to the tune of the best of music, every man in his place and not looking on all sides of him. Now they are all through with their reviews. I’m sure there is not a man of our Corps but is prouder than ever that he belongs to it. Kilpatrick’s Cavalry was reviewed yesterday. To a civilian who had never seen such things, it was no doubt a grand sight, but we could not help noticing the sad lack of discipline. Many officers failed to salute Sherman as they passed him, while others did it in as awkward a manner as it was possible to do it....A few days ago two or three of us went downtown...we met Sherman and one of the finest looking men I ever saw walking along very busy talking. We stepped aside and saluted him as he passed. They both returned the salute, wished good evening boys from Sherman....” Fine condition.
