A rare war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Frederick Scheerer, Co. L, 1st New Hampshire Cavalry (or 1st Rhode Island Cavalry), Winchester, Va., Feb. 6, 1865, in part: "…it look more peace movements now then ever it did before. I shall be glad if we do have peace for I have got about tired of this war…I will stop now and go over to the regiment for they have been on a grand raid…they did first rate. They captured the notorious Harry Gilmore and twenty others, quite a good haul for so short a time for they have not been gone but three days. We did not lose a man…I hope with next letter I write peace will be decided…there would be a good rejoicing throughout the land and…the soldiers would give a good cheer…Fred. Scheerer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
