He was appointed by United States President Woodrow Wilson to serve as Secretary of the Navy during World War I. Both 1pp. on Navy Department lettersheet, addressed to James Lawrence Kearny pertaining to a “china cup which was presented to your father, Commodore Lawrence Kearny, U.S.N., by the officers of the Constellation when he relinquished command of that vessel...” with letter by James Kearny donating the cup...plus; 19th century family letters from the Kearney clan.
