Great set of TWO Niles Weekly Register issues (Nov. 19, 1836 and Feb. 25, 1847) with post-Alamo Texas content. In the earlier issue, Texas President David G. Burnet issues his “Message to the First Congress of the Republic of Texas. It runs about six columns. This is followed by “SANTA ANNA’S PROTEST” in which the captured villain of the Alamo massacre gripes and complains about how badly he’s being treated in his prison. That runs about a full column. This is followed by Burnet’s reply to the imprisoned Mexican leader, about another two columns. He reminds Santa Anna, “...the best accommodations this new government had enjoyed were broken up when the army under your excellency’s immediate command conflagrated the town of Harrisburg.” This is a wonderful message and exchange between the two leaders, signed in type. BONUS issue, from the following February, given over to the resolve of the U.S. House “That the independence of the government of Texas ought to be recognized...” Issues remove from volume but otherwise like new.
