PARIS, Claude Rene (1736-1795) Captain, lieutenant of the company of the guards of the Navy and flag in the department of Rochefort in 1772, he receives a commission of captain of the ship on April 4, 1777, a year before the entry of France in the war of independence of the United States . It is part of the fleet gathered in Brest in the summer of 1778 , under the orders of the Count d'Orvilliers . He commanded in this fleet The Sphinx , vessel of 64 guns and participated on board the battle of Ushant , July 27.In the spring of 1780, he took part in the campaign in the West Indies under the command of Count de Guichen . On the 27th of April, at the Battle of Martinique , he commanded the Sphinx in the French rearguard who faced the British fleet of Admiral Rodney .War-date American Revolution document in French, 1pp. folio, 1778 and 1779, Fine condition.
