Stereoview with title on the reverse, “HUCKLEBERRIES”. An intimate portrait of Southern black domestic life, reveals the class and race bias underlying the placid image. In nineteenth-century slang, a huckleberry was a person of no importance, a nonentity. This imagewas produced and distributed by Telfair Stockton (1860-1932), a photography vendor based in Jacksonville, Florida, who became one of the leading real estate developers in the area. Exotic scenes such as appeared in Stockton's series may have been used to attract investment and new settlement.
