A rare Confederate general's official slave loss South Carolina court document in which then Col. JOHN DOBY KENNEDY (1840-1896) appoints a relative to collect compensation from the state for the loss of his slave "Robert." Kennedy was born in Camden, South Carolina and was educated at South Carolina College. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was elected captain of Company E, 2nd South Carolina Infantry. During the war, while a member in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, he was wounded six times and hit fifteen times by spent projectiles in fighting throughout the Carolinas and Virginia. He was promoted through the ranks and eventually was appointed a brigade general in the Confederate army. He was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina in 1880, was appointed by U. S. Consul general of China by President Grover Cleveland in 1886 and in death is honored on Camden's Confederate general's memorial fountain which honors Kershaw County's many Confederate veterans. A rare war-date Confederate slave loss document from the State of South Carolina, partially printed, 1p. folio, Kershaw District, S. C., January 5, 1864, reading, in part: "I John D. Kennedy of the district…do hereby…appoint A. M. Kenndey my true and lawful attorney…to receive from the State of South Carolina…all moneys that may be now due…for the loss of my negro slave Robert who died Jany. 1863 from disease contracted on the coast under order of the Legislature…to furnish labor for the defense of the State."
