A good war-date Confederate soldier's letter, oblong 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. R. F. Crutchfield, Co. D, 57th Georgia Infantry, [POW Vicksburg, MS, 7/04/63, paroled 7/07/63], Proctor's Point, S. C., April 7, 1864, in part: "…times are hard here. Everything is very high in the way of provisions. Bacon is worth three to four dollars per pound…turkeys 20 dollars a pease, chickens ten dollars apiece…we have had very disagreeable weather here cold and rainy…I thought that I should soon get of[f] home but the captain has saped [?] for a man that has not come yet and he is reported absent without leaf…that may stop any [more furloughs in our company for awhile until he comes. They say he is a very savvy fellow and there [is] no telling when that will be…he left his company last Friday morning to come here and has not got here yet…rite to me all about the wedding…if she has as mutch to say about the reste of us as she use too and how the olde folks like the match. I hope that they will like Hatcher better than they did Margaret as they had a great deal to say about her…R. F. Crutchfield." Crutchfield died at his residence in Wilkinson, Co.
