Michigan answers the call for volunteers just one day after Fort Sumter's fall. A rare, and perhaps unique, Civil War volunteer "call" document, 1p. 4to., State of Michigan, published April 16, 1861, reading, "PROCLAMATION" in small part: "…whereas, The President of the United States has made a requisition upon the State of Michigan for military aid in enforcing the laws and upholding the Constitution and the Union…this state…authorize the raising of two regiments…for the service of the federal government…the Adjutant General of this State is…authorized to accept the services of ten companies of infantry…for three months (unless sooner disbanded)…the Adjutant General will first select ten companies for immediate service…it is confidently expected the patriotic citizen soldiery of Michigan will promptly come forward to enlist in the cause of the Union, against an extensive rebellion in arms exists, threatening the integrity and perpetuity of the government…given at Detroit, this sixteenth day of April, A. D. 1861…AUSTIN BLAIR, Governor and Commander-In-Chief…". Then, "AN ACT TO PROVIDE A MILITARY FORCE…the Governor is hereby authorized and empowered to accept and muster…the volunteer uniformed militia…minors will be mustered on the written consent of their parents…such force shall be immediately put o a course of drill and instruction…this act shall take immediate effect. Approved March 16, 1861." Irregular lower margin, else near fine.
