War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Halsey Bartlett, 6th Connecticut Infantry, KIA at Bermuda Hundred, 4pp. octavo, Beaufort, South Carolina, June 26, 1862, and reads in part: “...This was a very thriving place before the Rebellion broke out. When we took Hilton Head last November, the Rebels evacuated this place, There was but a few white people who stayed here. Most of the Negroes taht were here stayed here. There is some intelligent Negroes here and some ignorant as can be. You ought to hear them talk. You would laugh, I guess. Some of them I can understand well, but others is like talking French. The women are very industrious. They come into camp every day to get washing from the soldiers, and they get some every day. In this way they earn a living for themselves and family. They will wash a shirt for five cents, a pair of socks for three cents. We find our own soap. While the men have to work for the government, they are all on most of them confiscated property. When we came from Edisto Island, we brought five hundred Negroes with us and landed them on Island about six miles from here. Of all the looking objects, the Negroes are (some of them) the most pitiful. Some of them are almost white and as handsome as a picture. While others are as homely and ill looking as any object I ever saw. You ought to see them. It would make you laugh to see them, to see their features and forms and see them maneuver...” Fine condition.
