A great war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Amos J. Groon, Co. G, 18th New York Vols., [n. p., but near Fair Oaks, Va.], May 28, 1862, to his cousin, in part: "…I think that you have been raising the devil…when I get back…we must have some beer and sides and then go and see the girls…we are in six miles of Richmond. The rebels are laying near us with a large force. The Chickahominy creek divides the pickets. They are near enough to speak to each other and they don't fire at each other…that is a good thing. Yesterday they had a fight on our right…when the general engagement takes place…there will be a lively time…we must whip. We get the praise of the skirmish at West Point. We got several vollies…we was well covered and laid close to the ground. The balls flew over our heads like the devil. If we had stood up we should of got many wounds in the legs. They was well directed shots, but we escaped all harm. They fired cross fire on us then they set up a great yell as if they was charging…we jumped up and fixed our bayonets to receive them and they did not dare to come…that ended the fight. Our colonel [William Young]…will be promoted…to a brigadier general…Amos Groon." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
