Union soldier's Gettysburg Campaign letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Fairfax Court-House, [Va.], June 18, 1863," in part: "…we marched from the bank of the Rappahannock last Saturday night…marched to Brooks Station…we came through by Stafford's Court House…halted at a place called Dumfrey. When the colonel stopped Co. D had but one man besides the captain & there were not over 40n or fifty men in all. The rest had fell out…not only the men, but the officers. There were a great many sun-struck that day…two or three…died. It was dreadful warm & the men were tired out with the march…we kept going all day until after dark then we encamped three miles south of Fairfax Station…we are now a mile northwest from Fairfax court House on the road to Centreville…toward Bull Run. It is a great curiosity to us to know where we are bound…it is thought by most of the men & officers that we were going to Alexandria & then to…Maryland…". With fully detailed transcription.
