Union soldier's Gettysburg Campaign letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Petersburg, Maryland, July 16, 1863," in part: "…it found me enjoying good health considering the hard marches…I stand it well…every few days it gets sore…we have marched from Boonsborough to Petersburg today. We have marches every since we left the Rappahannock but we have been well rewarded for it. Last night…our regiment…guarded 700 rebel prisoners [who were] taken by our cavalry at Williamsport…they were nice men, or the most of them. We divided our rations with them…were as friendly as brothers. We have followed close in rear of them all through Pennsylvania and Maryland, but have not had any act with them. The Rebels loss at Gettysburg was heavy and we have captured…prisoners all the way…the last…we captured at Williamsport was…2000. The Rebels done great damages to the farmers through Pennsylvania in taking off the horses & hoer property, but they have lost thousands…in the act. The Army is in excellent spirits from the success of our armies…we have captured a hundred thousand prisoners…confirmed that Port Hudson has surrendered. The Rebels are fast running their race & met with quite a heavy loss. Just before we left Pennsylvania I lost thirty dollars…it is quite a loss…I got it honest & lost it the same way & not by gambling as a great many do in the army…we have passed through places that I liked better than my own country…A. H. Jewel…". With fully detailed transcription. Light spotting, else VG
