Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Altus H. Jewel [WIA Fredericksburg, Va., May 3, 1863], Co. E, 77th New York Vols., "Camp near Stone House Mountain, Va., Oct. 7,1863," in part: "…yesterday was a great day in the 77th. [Col. Winsor B.] French has got to be colonel. The officers of the regiment put in and got him a sword, belt, sash and [shoulder strap] eagles. They…cost two hundred dollars. The brigade band came over and played at the presentation. The colonel made a speech…they had whiskey for the occasion…some of the officers felt their oats…eight in the evening the colonel of the 7th Maine and his men with their brass band came over. Each man had a lighted candle in their hand. The colonel made a short speech and French did also. The cavalry is driving away that was talked of…the 11 and 12 Corps of this army have gone to Alexandria. They are going south…the rest of this army is going to fall back near Washington…more of the troops will be sent south…we will get orders to march…the orderly sergeant and three corporals in Co. H was reduced to privates for getting drunk…Altus H. Jewel…". With fully detailed transcription. VG
