War-date A. E. S., adding rank, "Respectfully forwarded. Appd. B. W. Duke, Brig. Genl. Comdg., Cavalry Forces E. Tenn., Nov. 28, 1864," approving a leave of absence of ten days for Lt. J. M. Carson as acting ordnance officer. The original request written by Lt. Col. O'Bean, as post commander, 1p. oblong 8vo., "Head Quarters Carter's Brigade, [Newmarket, Tenn.], Nov. 23, 1864", reads, in part: "Lt. J. M. Carson…ten days [leave] to attend to important private business. O. Bean Lt. Col. Comdg. Post." Also docketed by Col. James E. Carter as a brigade commander in General Vaughn's command. BASIL WILSON DUKE (1838-1916) renowned Confederate cavalier and general who first enlisted as a private under the command of his brother-in-law, John Hunt Morgan, in the Lexington Rifles. He was captured, along with Morgan, in 1863 while raid into Ohio. Exchanged in 1864, he was appointed brigadier general who operated in Eastern Kentucky and Western Virginia. Later he commanded the troops who had the honor of attempting to guide Jeff Davis and company to safety in 1865. Near fine.
