War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Elias Peck, 10th Connecticut Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Richmond, Virginia, April 9, 1865, and reads in part: “...About noon day before yesterday we had orders to pack up and go on board of a canal boat to go to Richmond. The tug did not come to tow us up until yesterday noon....the schooner got on the obstructions by Fort Darling and we had to leave her. We arrived at Richmond about 9 oclock last night...we are quartered in a large brick tobacco factory which was used by the rebels as a hospital. I have not had a chance to go around the city any yet. The guards are very thick...There is about 50 pieces of captured rebel cannon on a street below here. I hear our Regt has lost 300 in killed and wounded in the fight at Petersburg...Capt. Martin has hired niggers enough to do his works so we have reported to a couple of lieutenants that belong to our Regt. here...The rebels burnt all the business part of the town. The two Rebel deserters in our Co. that I told you was on the same detail with we their folks last night...The river was very strongly fortified all the way up. The rebs left all their guns in them....” Fine condition.
