A great early Arkansas statehood, 2pp. folio, letter written by William R. Weldon, Elizabeth, Arkansas, July 1, 1849, to Abraham Weldon, Fancy Farm, Kentucky, reading, in part: "…cotton is not so good. Most people are mistaken about cotton. They think it requires a great deal of hard work, but the work is all light…there are men in this country who have grown rich by farming alone and such a thing is not known in kentucky unless they had a capital commerce…in this country cotton farming does not require so much land open…write to me who is the candidates for convention and legislature, how the people will vote on the slavery question as I hear there is great excitement on that subject. I feel in hopes that Kentucky will act worthy of the proud name she bares and [will] do all in her power to wipe out the only foul spot upon her [?] It is the opinion of most people here that she will emancipate her slaves and some of them are in a tolerable fry about it…I think there will be measures adopted to stop the importation of slaves as they are fearful they will be overrun by them. There is great preparations making here for the fourth…there will be as much patriotic spirit evinced as there will be anywhere else & a good deal more of another kind of spirit…William R. Weldon." The integral postmarked transmittal leaf with manuscript canceled "Elizabeth, Ark., July 4" and paid "10" cent postmarks is attached. VG
