This 2 page, 4 ½ x 8 inch, letter is written in nice dark pencil… RIGHT ON THE BATTLEFIELD! It is dated August 22nd, 1864. Private Warren Ward of Company C in the 1st Ga. Batt. S. S. is writing to his uncle, Colonel A. F. Pope in Macon, Ga. The cover is very special as it is a TURNED cover. On the inside when you peak (see our photo), it was sent previously to a Captain T. S. Gilham in Lexington, Georgia… anyway, our writer was able to procure it and use it to write his uncle. The cover has a “Paid 10” in red ink and a red “Lexington, Ga. Sep. 16th, 64” cancelation. Records show that our writer Warren Ward was captured near Nashville, Tenn. on December 16th, 1864 and sent to Camp Chase Prison in Columbus, Ohio. the content in part, ““I reached here on the evening of the 10th after stopping a day in Midgeville and three in Macon. I found the Battalion of the Sharp Shooters to which I formerly belonged disbanded. There was so few of them left that the command was ineffectual. ... I am now with my regiment of which there are six companies. I have had two of my best men killed in the campaign, they were noble soldiers. One of my company has greatly distinguished himself since I left. The boys don’t seem to entertain any thought of the enemies whipping us here. ...Our regiment has lost heavily in both officers & men. Prisoners captured speak of our charging their work. They don’t seem to think of charging us. I have but little idea that Hood will attempt any such a thing. ... I started Albert (his slave) down the road today foraging and gave him about fifteen pounds of lead to be expressed to you at Eatonton in care of Let. Dennis. I am in hopes you will get it... Since I reached here my regiment has had a great deal of running about to do for we were acting as reserve but now we are back in the trenches with the Brigade. The enemy keeps up an irregular shelling all the time and there is a constant picket firing going on. VG.
