Confederate civilian letter, 2pp, datelined March 8, 1865 written by “H. English”. he writes to Wm Allen Davis, in full, “I will be glad you will go with your Brother today and demand my feather bed from Margarett Jackson which Isaiah Barefoot stole out of my house last Saturday night a week, he came to my house for corn Monday morning last, and I told him to be off, he had stole my bed and ought to be hung, and one of the Gates's was there and Barefoot did not deny in taking the bed, and Gate's said his countenance condemned him, he said not a word, he took at the same time bowls, one white bowl, hold a quart, the other a small blue bowl holds a pint, 2 small bags salt, 3 plates, one a blue edge plate, the other 2 were white, all breakfast plates, salt cell glass, one white pitcher and a small white mug which we kept to drink out of, also a whitewash basin teapot and tumbler. If you will go and get those articles I will pay you one hundred dollars worth of corn at market price and be very much obliged to you.” Uniquely the letter is written on the back of a payment demand from the Commercial Bank of Columbia, South Carolina.
