War-date Union soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. John L. Hebron, Co. G, 2nd Ohio Vols., Battle Creek, [Tenn.], July 5, 1862, in part: "…we are still on Battle Creek…we can see the rebels across the [Tennessee] river from here. There was a man from Steubenville captured today. His name was Al Church. He used to run on the S. & J. R. R. He was in the 4[th] Ky. Cavalry. He was 2nd Lieut. There was 2 men swam over on the other side of the river. The [rebel] picket seen them…swimming and called them over to get something to drink…[he] promised to let them come back…they went over and stayed about half an hour and come back…we had a fourth of July dinner yesterday. We had crackers and bean soup and flitch [cured pork]…John L. Hebron." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
