Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. James Gray, Co. C, 50th Indiana Vols., "Camp Glendbrook, KY.", Feb. 16, 1862, to his friend John, in part: "…well, I wish you a happy good time and jolly little spree, a pocket full of money and a willow full of whiskie. Well John…we are roaming about and often we say…the foxes have holes and the birds…have nests, but we pore soldiers have not where to lay our head…we are now on the banks of Green River at the burnt bridge of Green River about 12 miles above whare the Louisville and Nashville rail road crosses. The country here is very hilly and broken…we are getting right among the Secesh…and look for a fight at any moment. There is a small river between us and the rebels. We can see their pickets and at nit we see their camp fires. The pickets often fire across at each other and sometimes kill. I saw a man…that was shot by a damn rebel…not killed, but badly crippled for life…I'll get a peep at the Secesh tomorrow as our company goes out on the scout and [the] captain says he will take us whare we can try our guns on them and if I get a squint through the sites of [my] pumpkin slinger…he will be apt to bite the ground…yesterday…a small party was going…up Green River and somebody fired some guns off across the river and we let of[f] every gun at them without knowing whether they was shooting at us…it raised a devil of alarm. The cavalry come thundering through the woods and in a half of an hour there was a regiment of cavalry on the spot. The old colonel ordered them back…and told them a long yarn, that we had been fired at…no more at present…James Gray…direct your letters…in care of Captain Attkinson, Company C, 50 reg. Ind. Vol…".
