The "Beautiful" Bridge Once Destroyed By John Hunt Morgan; Assigned Color Bearer Among "Reb" Leaning Kentuckians. A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., Corp. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, Mumfordsville, KY, Dec. 12, 1862, to his mother, in part: "…we left Louisville last Monday afternoon and are…about 80 miles from Louisville…we can not travel very fast. We have to stop about 3 oc. each day…to provide corn & hay for our nags…we are encamped right on the banks of Green River…a bold bluff rises on the opposite side which is fortified by a stockade to protect the beautiful bridge which crosses the river almost a hundred feet above and nearly over our heads. The bridge has been twice destroyed by the Rebs-Morgan & Bragg…but now the cars…run over it…we find few friends in this region. They are on the fence & welcome us or the Rebs about the same, but lean to Rebs…we made a long march yesterday…I had to carry the Guidon-company colors which is the duty of some one of the Non. Com. officers…some expect to get through to Nashville without a fight, others say we shall meet Morgan…I…only hope we shall do our duty if we are called upon. Do not fear for me. I am coming home safe and sound. You need not be troubled about my suffering…the whole Regt. is composed of young men who have fond parents…one of my messmates has recd/ a Lieut.'s commission another a captains…through influence…Wilmon."
