A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 2pp. 8vo., 1st Sgt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, Louisville, KY, Hospital No. 3, July 10, 1863, to his father, in part: "We are in the midst of great excitement as Buckner with 16 or 20 thousand is reported to be marching on the city. John [Hunt] Morgan has crossed the Ohio into Ind. and now the Ind. Militia is swarming after him & the gunboats are patrolling the river behind him so that his capture is considered certain. The city is under Martial Law-all stores closed and the citizens are forming companies & drilling. I shall go to my Regt…next week if I van get there, but now they will not let any able bodied men out of the city…sickness, neglect & medicine have played havoc with my teeth. I have had ten or twelve filled yesterday & today, paid Dentist $23. this is the amount minus 25 per ct discount…to soldiers. A corporal has just been brought in to the Hospt. and I am going to take his horse over to Mrs. Thompson's to keep until he gets well…thank your stars that our family is not in a border state…Wilmon."
