A rare Medal of Honor winner's war-date letter, 2pp. 4to., 1st Sgt. Wilmon W. Blackmar, Co. K, 15th Penn. (Anderson Troop) Cavalry, "Camp of Hd. Qr. Escort", Winchester, [Tenn.], Aug. 5, 1863, to his father, in part: "…this piece of paper is a sheet from a large quantity captured when we entered Tullahoma. It was manufactured in Dixie & sold for 25 cts a sheet…Gen. [Rosecrans] has been away and brought his wife back with him…an order came to turn out the Escort. In 10 minutes we were saddled up and waiting-in half an hour the Gen. came out and off we went for Gen. Thomas' Hd. Qrs.-Gen. R. and staff ride fast…much of the time we were at full stretch. We took a short cut coming back…while going through a field…one of the horses in front went down and all but 4 or 5 of us rode right over man & horse. I was bringing up the rear to keep the men…in line. I waited until he got up…then I had to go at top speed to catch up. We had not gone much further when over went the Captain's horse and today he can not bend his arm. It was so dark we could not see much. While we Sergts. were…in our tent…one of the boys came up…and was talking with me. All at once he said look behind you…I turned & there was a nasty snake just disappearing under Sergt. Agnew's head who was asleep. I woke him up and carefully removed the blanket, used as a pillow…I brought down a hatchet on him and made 3 pieces of him. I pushed the pieces away and Sergt. lay down again and finished his nap…Wilmon. Minor toning, else VG
