Wounded Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William B. Green, Co. G, 1st Conn. Heavy Artillery, Sickle's Barracks Hospital, Alexandria, Va., March 28, 1865, in part: "…I do not regain the strength in my legs…I can not step a step without crutches. I have a fine surgeon and…I have got on the right side of him…there is but five men in this hospital…most having been sent to the front…I can remain here as long as I can keep the crutch check good and as long as the doctor considers me very weak as he today brought a Christian delegate to me from head quarters with bottle of black berry wine…Gen. Sheridan has made connection with Gen. Grant at Petersburg…there will be some hard old fighting here soon…Davis…has been engaged as the 2nd Corps made a charge at Hatcher's Run a few days ago and were very successful…I have not received any mail with the exception of a letter…from a correspondent in Alexandria, a young lady that is a firm Rebel who considers me a prisoner of war and so is very sympathizing…she has promised to come and see me and says if she can render me any assistance she hopes I will not fail to inform her…Jim did not go home to vote…I see by the papers that Hon. Daniel P. Marcy was defeated in the recent election. I was very sorry as I wanted him to stand in Congress and defy the minions of Abe Lincoln's authority…Willie B. Green." VG to near fine.
