Autograph Letter Signed "J Houstoun," 1 page, 7.5" x 9". Augusta [Georgia], December 20, 1792. To "His Excellency the Governor" Edward Telfair, a former Member of the Continental Congress and a Signer of the Articles of Confederation. Small seal hole in blank portion. Tipped at the left to an 8.5" x 10.5" sheet. Fine condition. In full, "In Consequence of some Proceedings that have taken place, I think it a Duty both to the Country and myself, to resign my present appointment of one of the Judges of the Superior Court; And take this Method of signifying the same to your Excellency." John Houstoun (1744-1796), former Governor of Georgia (1778-1779, 1784-1785), had been appointed a Justice of the Superior Court of Georgia in 1791. One of the four originators of the "Sons of Liberty," Houstoun was a delegate to the Provincial Congress of Georgia (1775) and a Member of the Continental Congress (1775). As Revolutionary War Governor, he personally led an invasion force of troops of the Georgia militia in a campaign to drive the British out of his state. In 1787, Houstoun served on a commission to settle boundary disputes with South Carolina.
