SMITH, Caleb Blood (1808-1864) was an American journalist and politician, serving in the Cabinet of Abraham Lincoln, first as Secretary of the Interior, then as Judge of the United States District Court, during the American Civil War. Patent Document Signed, “Caleb B. Smith”, as Secretary of the Interior, December 23, 1862, 15” x 19-1/2” with beautiful engraving, full seal present, silk ribbons, government edge tape, else VG. The Patent is issued to William H. Towers, new York City, for his invention of an Improved Cork. Addionally, attached are drawings of the corks with full page desription.
