Group of three (3) Civil War passes and a patriotic cover all from Hilton Head, S. C...First; one-page, partially printed document, 8" x 5", Headquarters, U.S. Forces, Hilton Head, South Carolina; April 13, 1863. A pass permitting Captain Daniel Klein, 6th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry to pass "the intrenchments" until "April 30th 1863." The pass was granted by the order of Brigadier General Alfred Howe Terry (1827-1890), who signed the pass along with the 1st Lieutenant and Acting Aide-de-Camp. Klein mustered into Company C of the 6th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on September 6, 1861 and was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He mustered out on August 21, 1865. Second; one-page, partially printed document, 7.75" x 5", Headquarters, U.S. Forces, Hilton Head, South Carolina; June 22, 1863. A pass permitting J.S. Richardson, a trader, and friends "to visit 'St. Helena Island' until July 15th. 1863." The pass was granted by the order of Colonel John L. Chatfield and signed on his behalf by 2nd Lt. S. S. Stevens, 6th Conn. Vols., and Acting Assistant Adjutant General. Third: one-page, partially printed document, 4 7/8" x 4", Office Provost Marshal, Hilton Head, South Carolina; March 9, 1864. Pass permitting "Corporal Crawford and Six Men of Invalide [sic] Corps to town until 4 o clock P.M. this Day." The pass was granted and signed by John P. King, Captain & Adjutant Provost Marshal. Fourth; unused patriotic cover, 5.5" x 3 1/8", printed by Union Stationary, New York, circa 1861-1862, with lithograph of General Thomas W. Sherman's headquarters at Hilton Head, South Carolina. General Sherman (1813-1879) participated in the Union Army and Navy capture of Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, in November of 1861. In the wake of the Union victory, Sherman set up headquarters on Hilton Head Island. Overall VG to near fine. (4 pieces.)
