Nice group of fourteen (14) 18th, 19th and 20th century poets signed letters and signatures, includes: HUNT, James Henry Leigh (1784-1859), best known as Leigh Hunt, was an English critic, essayist and poet. Clipped signature from a document requesting a 1776 volume of Marvel and Works. Very good condition...plus; FIELD, Sr., Eugene (1850-1895) was an American writer, best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays. He wrote “Little Boy Blue.” He was known as the "poet of childhood". Autograph as a Member Union League Club. Fine condition...plus; HENLEY, William Ernest (1849-1903) was an English poet, critic and editor of the late-Victorian era in England who is spoken of as having as central a role in his time as Samuel Johnson had in the eighteenth century. He is remembered most often for his 1875 poem "Invictus", a piece which recurs in popular awareness (e.g., see the 2009 Clint Eastwood film, Invictus). It is one of his hospital poems from early battles with tuberculosis and is said to have developed the artistic motif of poet as a patient, and to have anticipated modern poetry in form and subject matter. Clipped signature “W.E. Henley.” Fine condition...plus; GINSBERG, Irwin Allen (1926-1997) was an American poet, philosopher, writer, and activist. He is considered to be one of the leading figures of both the Beat Generation during the 1950s and the counterculture that soon followed. He vigorously opposed militarism, economic materialism and sexual repression and was known as embodying various aspects of this counterculture, such as his views on drugs, hostility to bureaucracy and openness to Eastern religions.[1] He was one of many influential American writers of his time known as the Beat Generation, which included famous writers such as Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. Typed Portion of his poem “HOWL” with Autograph Note Signed “Allen Ginsberg June 7, ‘80” and reads “This is an idiot idea to request a writer sign a fragment opening of a poem. It makes me feel like an ‘object’ at the moment.” Fine condition....plus; NASH, Frederic Ogden (1902-1971) was an American poet well known for his light verse, of which he wrote over 500 pieces. With his unconventional rhyming schemes, he was declared the country's best-known producer of humorous poetry. Typed Letter Signed “Ogden Nash” 1pp. quarto, May 14, 1959 on his personal stationary, stating he has “never received an interesting rejection letter...” Fine condition....plus; MACLEISH, Archibald(1892-1982) was an American poet and writer who was associated with the modernist school of poetry. MacLeish studied English at Yale University and law at Harvard University. He enlisted in and saw action during the First World War and lived in Paris in the 1920s. On returning to the US, he contributed to Henry Luce's magazine Fortune from 1929 to 1938. For five years MacLeish was Librarian of Congress, a post he accepted at the urging of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. From 1949 to 1962, MacLeish was Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University. MacLeish was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes for his work. Two pieces one with corrections in his hand for his poem “Psyche with the Candle” and the other being a signed correction of the same poem. Both fine condition....plus; TENNYSON, Alfred ,1st Baron Tennyson FRS (1809-1892) was Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poets. Clipped signature “Tennyson” Fine condition....plus; MASEFIELD, John Edward (1878-1967) English poet and writer, was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930. Among his best known works are the children's novels The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights, and the poems "The Everlasting Mercy" and "Sea-Fever". Signed card “John Masefield.” Fine condition...plus; HOLMES, Sr., Oliver Wendell (1809-1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. A member of the Fireside Poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer and inventor and, although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law. Clipped signature. “O.W. Holmes” Very good condition...plus; LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth (1807-1882) was an American poet and educator whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline. He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and was one of the five Fireside Poets from New England. Clipped signature “H.W. Longfellow”. Fine condition....plus; MANCHESTER, William Raymond (1922-2004) was an American author, biographer, and historian. He was the author of 18 books which have been translated into over 20 languages. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award. Typed Letter Signed “Wm. Manchester” 1pp. octavo, April 3, 1979, and reads in part: “...My favorite quote about the value of history is from Santayana: ‘Those who do not remember the past are condemend to relive it.’” Fine condition....plus; FERLINGHETTI, Lawrence Monsanto (b.1919) is an American poet, painter, socialist activist, and the co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers. Author of poetry, translations, fiction, theatre, art criticism, and film narration, he is best known for A Coney Island of the Mind (1958), a collection of poems that has been translated into nine languages, with sales of more than one million copies. Signed Photograph “Lawrence Ferlinghetti.” Fine condition....plus; PARKER, Dorothy(1893-1967) was an American poet, writer, critic, and satirist, best known for her wit, wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles. Typed Letter Signed “Dorothy Parker” 1pp. quarto, “Spanish Refugee Appeal of the Joint Anti-Facist Refugee Committee” lettersheet, requesting votes and donations. Fine condition....plus; DICKEY, James Lafayette (1923-1997) was an American poet and novelist. He was appointed the eighteenth United States Poet Laureate in 1966. He also received the Order of the South award. Dickey was also a novelist, known for Deliverance (1970) which was adapted into an acclaimed film of the same name. Typed Letter Signed “James Dickey” 1pp. quarto, June 22, 1983, responding to an autograph request. Fine condition.
