GARFIELD, James Abram (1831-1881) was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination later that year. Garfield had served nine terms in the House of Representatives, and had been elected to the Senate before his candidacy for the White House, though he declined the Senate seat once he was elected president. He is the only sitting House member to be elected president. Autograph Letter Signed “J.A. Garfield” 1pp. octavo, on Fortieth Congress, House of Representatives illustrated lettersheet, March 12, 1869, addressed to the Secretary of Interior J.D. Cox, and reads “Capt. S. H. Cole formerly a citizen of Porlage Co. O. was a soldier of the 42nd O.VI. and is a worthy and honorable man I hope it will be possible for him to secure a clerkship...” Fine condition....plus; War-date Letter Signed for Colonel Garfield by his AAG W.H. Clapp, detailing Lt. Cole for officer of the guard....plus; War-date Autograph Letter Signed by J.C. Smith, as Lt. Colonel 96th Ill (later brevet brigadier general) 1pp. quarto, January 8, 1865, Nashville, Tennessee, addressed to U.S Representative Garfield, recommending Lt. Cole as a captain and A.D.C U.S. Vols. About very good condition...plus; Autograph Letter Signed by Samuel Cole to Secretary of War Stanton, January 31, 1867, requesting a leave of absence. Good condition...plus; War-date Generals Orders, issued to Lt. Saml H. Cole, 45th Regt. OVI. Good condition. Interesting group.
