Accounting document, April 23, 1856, settling part of the estate of Elizbeth Briggs. there are seven line items, of particular interest is “To one Negro woman named Emily and a Negro child named Susan, $900.00 ....” Fine. In 2019 dollars, that $900 is worth $25,000. Slavery was expensive.
