Pamphlet. “Dr. Anna Howard Shaw and Frederick Douglass.” Ca. 1915, following publication of Anna Howard Shaw’s book, The Story of a Pioneer, using her words from the 1903 Suffrage Convention in New Orleans to argue against giving women the right to vote, while attacking the 15th Amendment. 3 pp. 9” x 12”. “Who Frederick Douglass Was” focused on his relationship with his white wife Helen Pitts. It celebrates the racially charged appeal of white women leaders of the Women’s Suffrage movement to prejudice. ‘If political equality is the basis of social equality, and if by granting political equality you lay the foundation for a claim of social equality, I can only answer that you have already laid that claim. You did not wait for woman suffrage but disenfranchised both your black and white women thus making them politically equal. You have put the ballot in the hands of your black men, thus making them political superiors of white women. Never before in the history of the world have men made former slaves the political masters of their former mistresses!’ Shades of Jefferson Davis! Anna Shaw tells Southern men they made former slaves political masters of their women and says ‘the truth of the statement struck them, and they began to applaud... “At the point of Yankee bayonets, crushed and ruined, the Southern white man had to accept his fate for a time, of former slaves voting, under the heel of Reconstruction, but the white man of the South rose in his might, and came again into his own. Taking from the negro the ballot given by Anna Shaw’s crowd, not conferring it. The mentality of a child of eleven!... Not to Southern white men, but ‘to Dear Anna Dickinson and brave Theodore Tilton, is due the 15th Amendment,’ and the fact that ‘negro slaves were made political masters of their former mistresses!’”
