War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Elisha J. Humphries, Phillips Legion Cavalry, Co. A “Governor’s Horse Guards” of Georgia, 2pp. quarto, Savage Station, June 22, 1864, and reads in part: “...last Monday morning some where about sun up or a little before we went down to a placed called the White House...where there was thought to be some yankees...and which we immedately charged the pickets off capturing some fifteen. Hampton’s Division was then dismounted and formed a line of battle to attack the Yanks. When we got to withing four or five hundred yards of their entrenchments we run a foul and their line of skirmishers which poured a volley into us (wounding nobody though). When we stopped and threw us up some breastworks hoping the Yanks would come out and attack us, as their breast works lay under the cover of their gun boats and would not benefit us if we succeeded in carrying them as they could shell us out with their gun boats...I lay there and slept over half of the time with the Yanks throwing shell all around us - one piece threw sand all in my face and some five or six past right over our head casting off the tops of the trees...on Tuesday the fight started about two miles from there breast works and was fought with great vigor over boys charging them three or four times driving them back each time...in dismounting the brigade, they always keep one regiment mounted to do the charging in case the Yanks should run our men back. Three or four times I thought we was in for it but the Yanks took in the woods so that we could not do any charging on horse back so we done it on foot...” Fine condition.
