GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885) was the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877, commanding general of the Army, soldier, international statesman, and author. During the American Civil War Grant led the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy with the supervision of President Abraham Lincoln. During the Reconstruction Era President Grant led the Republicans in their efforts to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism, racism, and slavery.War-date Union general Autograph Letter Signed “U.S. Grant Maj. Genl.” 1pp. quarto, Head Qrs, Military Division of the Mississippi, Nashville, Tennessee, January 16, 1864, addressed to General G.H. Thomas and reads “Please send the bearer of this, Mr.s Bransford, under Flag of Truce, to the Confederate lines.” Mounted, with some dampstaining, else very good condition.
